CD: Red Carpet Massacre
(4 out of 5 stars)

You’ve got to give it Duran Duran, they’ve certainly stood the test of the time. The band revolutionized the '80s with their new romantic sound and artistic use of hair mousse. Then they muddled through the '90s with moderately successful and respectable recordings that added little to their musical legacy, but in no way threatened to diminish it. Now in the new millennium after an early stumble with their largely forgettable Astronaut release, Duran Duran has fabulously reinvented themselves yet again with a little help from producing maestro Timbaland and his right hand man Justin Timberlake.

Red Carpet Massacre is a true return to form for Duran Duran. Simon Le Bon’s whooping vocals and signature clucks are in full effect as the elder statesmen of electro-pop revive the sound that helped them shape an entire musical era.

‘Nite Runner’, which features vocals from Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, is perhaps one of the disc’s more contemporary, radio friendly selections while ‘Box Full O’ Honey’ and the title track are among the most nostalgic.

Other standouts include the intoxicating, new wave ‘Skin Divers’ and the infectious ‘She’s Too Much’, which hearkens back to the sound that Duran Duran fans have grown so accustomed to.

For good or for ill, Duran Duran is a band with the kind of enduring appeal reminiscent of The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith or Led Zeppelin. Sure they coast a bit on the coat tails of their past, but they never lose the essence of what made them superstars in the first place. For Duran Duran, Red Carpet Massacre is a testimony to this fact.
